Celebrate the rich history of tartan fabrics
Tartan is an umbrella term for a checked fabric pattern that tribes in the Scottish Highlands used to distinguish each clan. As part of the ongoing tense relations between Scotland and England, the British government tried to ban people from wearing tartan, causing it to lose popularity.
However, in 1822 George IV visited the country and encouraged people to showcase their tartans, and Queen Victoria further added to the revival because she was known to love Scottish culture.
England began to embrace tartan, and the pattern grew in popularity. Today, it's less associated with clans and more popular with clothing designers and upholsterers.
The colours can be more traditional or vibrant, and there are also plenty of patterns to choose between, with plaid tartan being the most popular.
Our wide range of tartan fabrics is perfect for adding some life to your designs. Better still, they're great value for money, despite coming from the most reputable mills in the UK.
Chenille tartan and checked fabric
Supremely soft and highly durable, chenille will never go out of fashion. The fabric is ideal for clothing and soft furnishings, and the unique texture creates a warm and luxurious feel. Originating from the French word for caterpillar, designers love chenille because it allows them to make high-end sofa covers, throws or clothing that will stand the test of time.
We have some stunning tartan or check chenille patterns available, including the Red & Yellow Shaldon Tartan pattern, which combines cheerful yellow tones with a deep and rich red that resembles a full-bodied wine.
Or, you can go for a more muted aesthetic with the tasteful Louise Tartan fabric, which comes in a combination of grey tones.
Tartan weaves
Fabric weaves are created when different threads are interlaced to form a cloth. How the threads are interwoven will determine the resulting fabric's strength, density and appearance.
For example, a tightly woven fabric will be more durable and have a smoother surface, while a loosely woven fabric will be more draped and have a more textured look.
Weaves can also be combined to create unique fabrics with interesting patterns and textures, which is why this material is so popular for tartan patterns.
Our huge range of woven fabrics includes traditional designs, including the Shaldon Woven fabric in a light cream and black combination, but we also have bolder patterns in the collection.
The Shaldon Blue checked fabric will immediately catch anyone's eye, and there are also colourful combinations of greens, purples, and yellows.
Leather tartan
Yes, leather can have tartan patterns, and this colourful collection will make a bold statement. Ideal for upholstery fabric, we always go the extra mile with our faux leather patterns.
It doesn't get much brighter than the Nevis collection, with deep pink, sky blue, lime green and other colours to inject some life into your designs. Better still, all of our leathers are faux, making them suitable for everyone.
Wool tartan
When you think of wool fabrics, you might imagine scratchy sweaters or itchy wool skirts. However, wool is a very versatile fabric with a wide range of properties. The material is naturally fire-resistant and wrinkle-resistant, making it a popular choice for winter clothing.
In addition, wool fabrics are very absorbent, making them ideal for towels and other materials. Finally, wool is a very strong fabric, making it ideal for rugs and carpets.
