Focus On Pattern Houndstooth Fabrics

Houndstooth fabric is a timeless classic and is a favourite for Autumn/Winter. First created in Scotland in the 1800’s Houndstooth is commonly associated with warm, woollen clothing. It was worn by Shepherds to keep them warm on the Scottish Highlands. However, over time it has become a popular choice in the home.

Traditionally, Houndstooth was adopted by the wealthy. It was a symbol of status and elegance. However, as demand amongst the general public began to grow, Houndstooth fabric became a household choice. The rise in demand meant that designers had to keep the look fresh and new, so alongside the original black and white pattern shades of brown, blues and greens began to emerge onto the market.

Using Houndstooth for upholstery makes a bold statement. It adds a crisp, clean element to your home while still maintaining a touch of fun. Be sure to consider the size of the pattern in relation to the size of your furniture. A large print will drown a smaller piece, like a footstool whereas a small “puppytooth” pattern on a large sofa will get lost and look too busy.

Houndstooth cushions or pillows are an easy way to introduce the pattern without having to commit to a statement piece of furniture. With such a strong pattern only one or two cushions can make a big impact.
