Cushions are essential to the comfort of any space, whether it’s a home or an office, as they make your furniture plusher and warmer. They also improve the look and feel of your space by adding both a sense of warmth and creativity, given the many designs cushion covers can come in.
Cushions can be paired perfectly with chairs, not only adding extra padding but also visual appeal, especially when they match the fabric and design of the chairs. Cushions can also offer an opportunity for self-expression as you have the freedom to choose the size, shape, colours, and patterns for them in order to complement your space. Whilst cushion covers are sold with zippers in the majority of fabric stores, they can also come without zippers.
Moreover, you can even create your own zipperless cushion covers at home. It’s not only easy but also more convenient, given that you don’t have to pay for new ones and your cushions are then easier and quicker to change because you can just make your own. Another benefit of making your own zipperless cushion covers is that you can personalise them more since you can style the cover yourself. Here’s a quick guide to making your own zipperless cushion covers.
You will need the following:
1. A pair of scissors
2. Needle
3. Pencil
4. Thick thread
5. Measuring tape
6. Strong fabrics
Note: It is more efficient to have a sewing machine as it’s quicker and easier. However, you can still sew them by hand if you don't have a sewing machine available at home. It may be more time-consuming, but it will give your cushions more sentimental value, and you can take more pride in them having put more time and effort in.
1. There are different sizes of pillows. First, you need to know the measurement of the pillow to know how much of the fabric to cut. In measuring the cushion, you need to know the dimensions, as well as the width and the height of the pillow. Add at least 1/2 inch to each to have extra fabric to sew the seams.
2. Put your fabric on a flat surface and draw straight lines for the measurements. Once done, you may begin cutting the fabric.
3. Only one side of the fabric is done. For the other side, you must add 3-4 inches on the width of the fabric and repeat step 2.
4. When you are done cutting the second side of the fabric, you must then cut it in half lengthwise. For those who have a square cushion, you may have to cut it lengthwise or crosswise.
5. When all of the cutting is done, lay the first side flat, with the blank part of the fabric facing you. You may pin each corner of the fabric to have a firm hold and have your fabrics fully flat on your table.
6. Grab the fabric that is cut in half; the 2 sides must overlap each other at the centre. Then pin your fabric corners just the same as the corners of the first side of the fabric.
7. The overlapping part of the centre acts as a window where your cushions must be inserted, so you'll be making an envelope-style cushion cover.
8. Remember to have both blank parts of the fabric facing you. When you are sure, use your pencil and draw a line where you ought to sew them together. Leave at least 1/2 inch from the end of each fabric, this allows you to have enough seam if the cushion cover is done.
9. Next is to sew all the sides of the fabric and make sure to follow the lines. This will have a crisper appearance for your cushion covers once it's done. Sew the sides of your fabrics at least twice for durability purposes. Once all of the sewing parts are done, turn the cover inside out, and now you're good to go.
10. Use the centre opening with the overlapping fabrics to insert your pillows. You can even have additional decors to them by sewing ribbons or a flower accent on one corner of your cushion cover.
This envelope-style cushion cover is to make it easier for you to change your cushion covers. It's one of the most efficient and convenient ways to redecorate your space, whilst also adding a personalised and creative touch to it.
