Your choice of fabric type, fabric colour and fabric design is exactly that, your choice. You are the one that has to live with the patterned sofa or velvet curtains, while the design of your home is ultimately up to you, there are some simple rules that you can follow to really transform your home. Most people would agree that your windows and curtains are the focal point of any room and so this is a good place to begin your transformation.
If you are fortunate enough to have more than one window in a room then it can be tempting to showcase all of the beautiful fabric designs that you have chosen, but this is not the best way to go. Try to keep to the same fabric but if you really want to use different designs then stay in the same colour palette.
If your windows open inwards, then eyelet curtains take up the least amount of room, creating the feel of a larger window. If you choose a fabric with a large pattern then ensure the curtain or pelmet is big enough to show the complete design, if it is not then opt for a small pattern or plain fabric.
Using a stripe fabric can make a window look taller but ensure that, with any design you choose, the fabric is accurately pattern matched. If you are not confident doing this, consider using our made-to-measure curtain service.
Cushions are a fantastic way of injecting some colour into a room. If you are stuck with a magnolia room then you can be bold with colour and prints. If you have splashed out with colours on the walls then choose complementary fabric for your cushions, not sure which colour to choose? Read our blog on choosing the perfect fabric colour.
The great thing about cushions is that you can combine a mixture of fabrics; this adds an extra dimension to your interior design. Combine heavier fabrics, like wool or faux fur with lighter ones like silk; this is a great way to show off your personality. Patterns are also a great way to show some personality but don’t go too crazy, you don’t want to give yourself a migraine when you’re trying to relax in your living room. Combine prints with block colours to keep a room looking fresh and modern.
