What Is Kilim Upholstery Fabrics ?

Kilim is a word that is being thrown around in the design world but what does it actually mean? Well at Yorkshire Fabric Shop we know what it means, and so we wanted to let our customers in on the secret.

Kilim is of Turkish origin and is a word used to describe a pileless textile produced by one of the several flat weaving techniques. These methods are commonly seen in parts of Turkey, North Africa, Iran, and Pakistan. This woven fabric is traditionally used for rugs or tapestries but is becoming more popular for handmade cushions, made-to-measure curtains or upholstery. Commonly made with wool, kilim fabric can sometimes be made with cotton, silk or even coarse animal hair.

Kilim fabric is sometimes referred to as “slit woven,” a weaving technique that produces crisp, geometric designs synonymous with kilim fabric. A very bold fabric, traditionally made up of earthen tones, kilim fabric is becoming very popular due to its exotic style. It is an excellent way to update your home and is a popular choice for Moroccan or Aztec inspired designs.
