Top Tips For Cleaning Your Soft Furnishings

You’ve spent a lot of time, attention and money choosing the perfect fabric so understandably you don’t want all that to go to waste by simply cleaning it the wrong way.

Maintaining the cleanliness of your soft furnishings and eliminating stubborn stains doesn't need to be an overwhelming task. To help you understand the needs of your fabrics and soft furnishings we have created a helpful guide with our top tips on how to care for your Yorkshire Fabric Shop fabrics and soft furnishings.

A Speedy Refresh

Do your fabrics or soft furnishings just need a quick rejuvenation?

A preferred method for refreshing fabric involves crafting a cleaning mixture using dish soap and baking soda in a bowl of water. To proceed, gather a saucepan lid and a microfiber cloth.

Begin by immersing the cloth in the cleaning solution, soaking it thoroughly to ensure optimal effectiveness. You should then ring out the cloth and wrap the cloth around the saucepan lid making sure to bunch the cloth at the handle of the lid. You will then be able to wipe down your soft furnishing with ease, and even create some fancy cleaning lines if you are feeling that little bit extra!

Getting Rid Of Pesky Stains

A highly effective solution to eliminate stubborn stains involves crafting a vinegar based mixture. Combine 1/4 cup of vinegar, 3/4 cup of warm water, and 1 tablespoon of either dish soap or mild soap. Once blended, transfer the solution into a convenient spray bottle for easy application. Target the affected area by misting it with the prepared solution, allowing the powerful combination to work its magic. Employ a soft cloth for scrubbing, ensuring thorough coverage until the stain effortlessly lifts, leaving your upholstery pristine and free from pesky stains.

Tackling Tricky Velvets

Velvets have created a bad name for themselves over the years being hard to maintain and attracting dust and dirt! Now we agree, velvets are not for the weak and we would only recommend using velvets if you have time to clean your soft furnishings regularly. If you think velvet is still the right choice for you make sure to take note of our top velvet cleaning tips below.

1. You first want to start by softly brushing the velvet with a soft bristled brush to loosen any dust and dirt that may have settled within the fibres of the fabric. You should then follow by vacuuming away the excess dust and dirt.

2. Once all of the dust has been removed from the fabric you can then start to focus on problem areas with a lint free cloth and a mixture of dish soap and water. Top tip - using a lint free cloth is a must with velvet as the fibres from a normal cloth can often get stuck in the pile of the fabric. Gently dab the affected area with your cloth and mixture.

3. Once you have finished cleaning the area you may find that the fabric has compressed creating white spots. To solve this problem you can simply steam the fabric to revive the long strands within the material. Gently pull the steamer back and forth making sure to not steam one area for too long.

How To Clean Leathers

When dealing with leather upholstery, an effective cleaning solution can be concocted by blending ½ cup of olive oil with ¼ cup of vinegar in a convenient spray bottle. Once the cleaning mixture is prepared, generously apply it to the surface of your leather upholstery. Utilize a soft cloth to buff the treated areas, ensuring a thorough and even distribution of the solution. This careful buffing not only cleans the leather but also enhances its sheen, leaving your upholstery looking revitalized and well-maintained. Make sure to embrace this simple yet powerful method to preserve the beauty of your leather furniture.
